Exploring the electrical and optical properties of graphene derivatives for the detection of cyanotoxins

Abstract

In this project, graphene derivatives - defined here as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide and graphene quantum dots - will be studied and applied as electronic and optical devices capable of directly interacting with cyanotoxins; highly toxic substances present in aquatic ecosystems and water reservoirs. For this purpose, thin films of graphene derivatives with different combinations and architectures will be fabricated onto interdigitated metal electrodes for the development of electronic devices. In addition, graphene quantum dots with different emission colors will be synthesized, studied and applied as optical probes with the same detection intention. It is expected that the electrical and optical properties of graphene derivatives will undergo considerable changes after interaction with the cyanotoxins. Specifically, we aim to detect microcystins and saxitoxins; the most predominant and lethal types of cyanotoxins, verifying the best cost-benefit linked to the sensitivity, reproducibility and measurement time involved.
