The diffusion of urbanism in São Paulo in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo between 1910 and 1945

Abstract

The research aims to investigate the diffusion of the new discipline of urbanism (cityplanning, stadtebau, urbanisme) in the city of São Paulo, between 1910 and 1945, through the local press, in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, considering that, in the formation of this new field of disciplinary diffusion with the local community was a prerequisite for its consolidation. The paper therefore adopts the hypothesis that the press in São Paulo, especially the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, during the period of analysis propagated and promoted the new theories and practical actions of urbanism. According to historians of urbanism, such as Maria Cristina da Silva Leme, Maria Stella Martins Bresciani, Sarah Feldmann, José Geraldo Simões Junior, Donatela Calabi and Cristiane Colins, urbanism formed as an autonomous discipline, in the beginning of the 20th century, in a process of internationalization of specific knowledge about the city . Between 1910 and 1945, the diffusion of the new discipline takes place through the organization of congresses, exhibitions and specialized publications, where plans have been announced that have become emblematic for the consolidation of this new field of knowledge. The dissemination of these ideas and practices around the new discipline circulated in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, where in the period delimited theoretical texts on the new discipline, reports of trips of foreign professionals by Latin America, international congresses, debates on the implementation of new plans, projects and legislation concerning urbanism, both for the capital and for some important cities in the interior of the state. Articles published in the Journal of the Institute of Engineering, in the Polytechnic Magazine, as well as other specialized publications, on the new analytical instruments, as well as their design practices and legislative norms that would be applied in the cities were also reproduced in the newspaper. In the formation and diffusion of urban culture, professionals from various backgrounds (engineers, architects, philosophers, economists, self-educators, etc.) began to organize themselves in a more or less specific field and began to disseminate their ideas for intervention in cities , impelling the formation of a new autonomous disciplinary corpus. During the administration of the Republican Paulista Party, from 1910, and during the Vargas Era (1930-1945), anova discipline is widespread in a context of internationalization of a practice and a new knowledge that is supposedly scientific about the city. As an investigative method, it is intended to analyze the texts of the newspaper about the interventions for which the city of São Paulo spent verifying how the news in O Estado de São Paulo reveals, underlying the official texts and the projects elaborated at the time, the introduction in the capital of new ideas and tendencies of urbanism. In the period delimited in the research for the analysis, between 1910 and 1945, some landmarks can be presented. (AU)
