Polyelectrolyte microcapsules as a model of controlled release system for photosensitive drugs

Abstract

A variety of therapies have emerged in recent years because of advances in the field of applied technology. Among these therapies, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), which makes use of the combination of photosensitive drugs and light, which in the presence of molecular oxygen produces reactive oxygen species, such as singlet oxygen, is the main cytotoxic agent of neoplastic tissues characterized by a succession of biological events such as phototoxicity, vascular damage, loss of membrane integrity, among other factors. Most of the photosensitive drugs used as active principle in PDT are lipophilic, therefore insoluble in aqueous environment (physiological medium). To solve this systematization, it is carried out the placement of this assets in drug delivery systems (DDS)The objective of this research project is to develop a new controlled drug release system, in the present case photosensitive polyelectrolytic microcapsules using calcium carbonate microparticles as template, to locate the active in the target tissue in a site-specific manner.This project is based on a highly multidisciplinary scientific development combining protocols, techniques and experimental trials of the field of pharmaceutical technology, nanotechnology and photobiology. The work will be carried out in two subsequent steps. Firstly, studies will be carried out on the development and characterization of a new drug delivery system. In the sequence, the in vitro cytotoxicity assays will be carried out and finally the photobiological studies combining the application of laser light and nanostructured photosensitive drug to evaluate the biological response to the photostimulus.
