Genes expression associated with thermoregulation in beef cattle under grazing

Abstract

There is a growing global warming eminence that will change the environment in which animal production takes place. Thus, the developments of animal breeding programs that can respond rapidly to these changes with more sustainable production systems are needed. Therefore, is desirable to have animals that can be more adapted to the environmental conditions without reduction in their productivity. The aim of this project will be: (1) study the accelerometer's (Ovi-bovi®) accuracy to identify the individual daily water intake time in beef cattle; (2) study the expression of heat stress genes and performance of animals with different profiles of individual daily water intake and activities during the daytime period; (3) evaluate individual daily water intake and activities during the daytime in animals kept on pastures with different levels of fertilization or with different supplements; (4) study expression of heat stress genes in Nelore and Nelore x Angus crossbred (F1). Third-six Nelore animals kept on pasture with different fertilization levels (without fertilization and with 180 kg of nitrogen per hectare / year) and 36 F1 animals with different supplements (mineral salt and energy protein supplement- 0.3% body weight) will be used. The gene's transcript levels encoding HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90 proteins will be compared among the 9 animals with higher and lower daily water intake and activity during the daytime period. The animals body weight records will be obtained for the comparison between the group with the highest and lowest water intake and activity within each breed. The effect of level of fertilization (Nelore) and supplementation (F1 animals) on water intake and activity during the daytime period will be evaluated. Finally, the expression of thermoregulation associated genes between Nelore and F1 animals will be compared. (AU)
