Abstract

The purpose of this project is to conduct an innovative study of the implications of the chemical composition of the atmosphere of Araraquara mesoregion on health. In this region, the atmospheric emissions are going through considerable changes due to mechanization of the sugarcane harvesting process, and to the strength of the industrial activity. We intend to identify and quantify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, which have known mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, some organic and inorganic markers in the atmospheric aerosol, in addition to gases O3 and NOx, recommended by legislation CONAMA 03/1990 and by state decree number 59113/2013. This study will allow for better understanding the processes that regulate the concentrations of a diversity of chemicals in the atmosphere, identifying their emission sources contributions to the exceedances of the limit values stipulated by legislation. The obtained data will be correlated to the numbers and causes of hospitalizations and deaths, by means of epidemiological studies, which may provide important information about how health is affected by atmospheric pollution. All proposed evaluations are requirements to structure cost-efficient strategies of mitigation and adaptation. Information exchange between the different interdisciplinary groups involved in this research together with a unique database will lead to results of great impact. (AU)
