Abstract

Palliative Care (PC) aims to improve the quality of life of people with chronic life threatening diseases, understanding multidimensional aspects of diseases and the importance of adequate communication and family support. The modern hospice movement, origin of the current PC, had its origin in the 1960s in England. The breakthrough was initially higher in the UK itself, with peak growth in the 1980s. In the United States, the breakthrough was higher after the 1990s and in South America, especially after the start of this new century. However, the regional advance has occurred mainly in the number of health services and providers, but apparently to a lesser extent in terms of intellectual and scientific production. This study aims to investigate the PC situation in South America in terms of scientific production and their evolution over the last two decades; identify barriers perceived by PC professionals in conducting studies; and formalize a consensual document with proposals and suggestions of attitudes that stimulate research in the region. To do so, the present study will be divided into three distinct phases: 1, a systematic review of all studies on the theme "PC" published in the last 20 years with at least one of the authors with affiliation in South American countries; 2, translation and adaptation of a questionnaire that assesses barriers related to the accomplishment of studies and, in sequence, a survey study with professionals of PC; 3, meetings of a collaborative group formed for this research, aiming at the advancement of research in PC in South America, for consensual diagnosis of the current situation, identification of barriers and proposals for improvements to be presented to the competent institutions that regulate, have a political role or promote research (governmental or non-governmental).
