Biorefineries and new pathways for the development of sustainable catalytic processes

Abstract

This new century has been characterized by intense research on the use of renewable sources for the production of base chemical compounds, such as conversion of ethanol, biodiesel, glycerol and lignino cellulosic materials and also in the preservation of the environment with the conversion of NOx and CO2 into products with low environmental impact. However, there is a need for extensive restructuring in industrial chemical installations that are mostly based on petroleum and therefore highly polluting. Currently is on the way the conception of technologies, so that today's refineries will gradually become industries capable of achieving the integrated conversion of biomass and oil, at the same time as emissions of pollutants are minimized. During this transition period, the aim is to create the scientific and technological basis for future refineries based on the exclusive transformation of biomass into fuels, energy and chemicals. In this context, this "Visitante do Exterior" proposal aims to intensify the works developed in biorefineries and environmental catalysis in Georgia Tech (United States) with those in development by researchers from the state of São Paulo.
