Abstract
The increasing demand for online services has led to unprecedentedgrowth in the size and complexity of commercial datacenters.Implementing efficient coordination middleware has then become crucialto ensure consistency and high-availability for the very large volumeof data stored at today's datacenters. In this project we addressdistributed lock manager services, a coordinating middleware, andpropose the acceleration in hardware of distributed lock andconfiguration management algorithms as a way to make this core servicescalable. In particular, we request funding for the acquisition of asmall cluster of servers equipped with FPGA boards interconnected by ahigh-speed network, in order to synthesize and evaluate theperformance and scalability of distributed hardware-assisted lock andconfiguration management services. At the current stage of theproject, we have already derived and validated a simpler version ofthe service in a single FPGA board, by emulating the inter-FPGAsnetwork in software. (AU)
