Abstract
This study will evaluate experimental dentifrices based on essential oils of Ricinus communis (Rc), Melaleuca alternifólia (Ma), Pinus strobus (Ps), Copaifera officinalis (Co), Curcuma longa (Cl), Eucalyptus citriodora (Ec) e Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth (Bvk) for hygiene of complete dentures, by means of in vitro and in vivo tests,. The tests will be performed according to the following groups (dentifrices): GI: without active principle (Negative Control-NC), GII: Conventional Trihydral (Positive Control - PC), GIII Experimental 1 (Rc), GIV: Experimental 2 (Ma), GV:Experimental 3 (Ps), GVI: Experimental 4 (Co), GVII: Experimental 5 (Cl), GVIII: Experimental 6 (Ec), GIX: Experimental 7 (BvK). The in vitro study will include the evaluation of the organoleptic, physical-chemical and rheological characteristics, as well as the ability to remove biofilm and antimicrobial action against the multi-species biofilm of Candida albicans (Ca), Staphylococcus aureus (Sa) and Streptococcus mutans (Sm) by counting colony forming units (CFUs). The in vivo study will comprise a randomized clinical study, in which 30 complete denture wearers will be randomly assigned to the five groups (dentifrices): Negative Control (NC), Positive Control (PC) and three experimental dentifríces with better results from in vitro study. Participants will be instructed to brush their dentures three times a day for 7 days and immerse them in water overnight. It will be evaluated the ability to remove biofilm, antimicrobial activity against Candida spp, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus spp., Gram-negative bacteria, and total aerobics, by counting UFC, the capacity of remission of Chronic Atrophic Candidiasis and the degree of acceptance of the dentifrices. The data obtained will be subjected to appropriate statistical tests. (AU)
