Abstract
The growth of the elderly population has been occurring in an accelerated way throughout the world. The elderly at some point in their life may need care taken by other people. Studies have shown that the number of elderly people who care for another elderly person in the same household has increased in recent years. The caregiver act can lead to a greater number of comorbidities, among them chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the major health problems reported by people over the age of 60. Pain can negatively influence social, psychological and cognitive variables, and some studies describe a worse cognitive performance in individuals with chronic pain. In this way the present study aims to analyze if chronic pain is a predictive variable of cognitive decline in elderly caregivers. It is a quantitative and longitudinal study carried out with elderly caregivers aged 60 years or older. We will interview 350 elderly caregivers who participated in an earlier survey that occurred in 2014. The data collection will take place at the domicile of the participants who agree to participate in the research. The sociodemographic characteristics, health, care provided, chronic pain, depressive symptoms, overload, stress and functionality will be reassessed. (AU)
