Abstract

We are grounded on an Ethological approach committed to the Developmental Systems Theory and aligned with the ideas of the Extended Synthesis of Biology, aiming to investigate how social changes in the environment can guide the course of one's development. We will use concepts such as niche construction and developmental niche, assuming that the features of both the organism and the environment define the interactions between them. We understand that whilst the development of the organism is controlled by its environment, the changes one makes in the environment will also play a crucial role on their own developmental paths. We seek to integrate relevant concepts of different biological fields, securing a systemic view and aiming at applying this knowledge on behalf of the wellbeing of the different studied species, through four sub projects: 1) social and cultural influences and niche construction in human babies and toddlers, including motor and cognitive development and the use of mobile apps; 2) interactions between Guarani and non-Guarani children in structured and non-structured activities, e.g. playing; 3) dog-human interactions, focusing on communication and the development of context-dependent social skills; 4) niche construction in non-human primates and translocation of howler monkeys. In addition to contributing to the advance of frontiers in Science, this project will enable the creation of a national and international multidisciplinary network, with the participation of several institutions and a main core at an institution of the state of São Paulo, which will generate an impact on both theoretical and applied spheres.
