Abstract

The few studies that refer to the theme adopt as an interpretive model the idea that in Portugal a heterodox positivism predominated, whereas in Brazil prevailing comteana orthodoxy, positions that will seek to review in this work. To elucidate this problem of orthodoxy and positivist heterodoxy will help in some way to understand the conciliatory, diffuse, and persistent character of positivist culture in our times. Therefore, this research will be based on the analysis of a wide range of historical sources, composed generally by texts written by Portuguese and Brazilian intellectuals between 1870 and 1910. It will also be based on the so-called critical-historical method, which consists, in short, documents with the context in which they were written. It is justified, firstly because there are no comparative studies regarding the phenomenon of positivism in Portugal and Brazil, despite the innumerable and evident connections between the two positivisms.
