Abstract

Melatonin is an ubiquitous and amphiphilic indoleamine mainly biosynthesized by pineal gland and with classical chronobiological bond, nevertheless, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, inhibits lipid peroxidation, it is relevant in tissue damage protection, modulates substrate/energy content as well as activity of mitochondrial electrons transport chain, showing to have a important role on the intermediary metabolism. Due these properties, many sports researchers are investigating the effects of melatonin on this field. Then, our aim will be conducted in two different stages. The first stage will be analyzing the role of intermediary metabolism in the ergogenic effect under melatonin administration. Although there is evidence of the ergogenic character of endogenous and exogenous melatonin for exhaustive long-term exercise, it is still unclear about the involved physiological mechanisms. In the second stage, will analyze the effect of melatonin exogenous on muscle repair after a single high-load exercise session. Thus, we hope that our results may contemplate investigations of clinical and scientific relevance and elucidate knowledges about the participation of melatonin in physiological mechanisms involving skeletal muscle tissue.
