Abstract

The Night of the Castle by Antonio Carlos Gomes: a performance-oriented musicological transcription. The project aims to provide the restoration and musicological transcription of the score of the first opera of Carlos Gomes, "The Night of the Castle", from 1861. Despite the undeniable musical and historical importance of this score, a more consistent work of editing has not yet been done, leaving a gap both in the musical trajectory of Carlos Gomes and in an important moment of Brazilian culture, when it was sought to create an opera of national character. The project includes the preparation of the orchestral score, as well as a new vocal score. It is noteworthy that a few years ago the coordinator of this project, with the support of Fapesp, carried out the restoration of Gomes' second opera, "Joanna de Flandres", a score that had not been explored until now. Sources for the production of the new edition include the autograph manuscripts stored at the Institute of Brazilian Studies of the University of São Paulo, as well as period performance copies that are in the Museum Carlos Gomes, probably those that were used in the first presentations in 1861. The result of this proposal will permit musicologists and performers to have access for the first time, to a critical edition of the very first opera composed by Gomes, which artistic qualities triggered his successful international career.
