Abstract

In 1994, coincidently, two Brazilians novelists, Rubem Fonseca (1925) and João Silvério Trevisan (1944), wrote about the life of two national musicians of the century XIX: Carlos Gomes (1836-1896) and Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920). Although protagonists of different trajectories, the musicians have an equal characteristic of letting Brazil by the imperial government assistance, for develop their studies in Europe. Carlos Gomes, the protagonist of O Selvagem da Ópera, of Fonseca, lives tormented with a model of opera very appreciated in Europe, and Alberto Nepomuceno, one of the protagonists of Ana em Veneza, of Trevisan, seems to inherit the same problem lived by his compatriot years before, though Nepomuceno has a tendency more modernist in relation with the real condition to create a national art. Using the image of Brazilians musicians like characters, the authors produce a new look of the Brazilian identity and they enable a reflection about the historical-literary perspectives of these identities projects, since the Romantism. In this way, the present search wants to verify the manner that the writers reread our demand for a Brazilian art, proposing a dialog with the project of identity construction, operative in the end of century XIX and the beginning of the century XX. Therefore, the search intends to discuss how the fiction, almost in the century XXI, has the music like metaphor and the exile like mediation, discuss the nationality construction, making a route that contemplate three important moments: the fundator Romantism, in the century XIX; the vanguard rereads in the beginning of the century XX; and the moment of the novel's write in the end of the century XX.
