Abstract

Antônio Carlos Gomes was inserted successfully in the Italian operatic scene, referring, mainly, in the assimilation of the techniques of his contemporaries such as Verdi, Ponchielli, Mascagni, among others. Aiming to analyze the insertion of his compositional process in view of the new language of opera in the second half of the nineteenth century, this project focuses on studying the reformulation of the Italian melodrama, placing its focus of analysis in the restructuring of the aria, by the investigation of compositional resources of his opera Fosca, 1873. The central idea is the analisys of recurrent figures of speech, such as topical and rhetorical, on the arias of Fosca. Based on the possibility of such figures of speech are embedded in a higher density of texture in the dramatic character of the structures of melodrama, observing mainly the acquisition of elements of wagnerianism, beyond the study of its historical moment during the production, this project seeks to observe a new vision of Gomes of the Italian aria, since this opera falls right in the perspective of artistic renewal arising from the 60s of the XIX century, in Italy.
