This research project aims at developing techniques for reliability-based optimization, focusing on the analysis and design of structural systems considering progressive collapse. In this context, progressive collapse is understood as the process where damage develops in a structural system from a local or individual component and propagates to the rest of the structure, resulting into a partial or complete collapse. Progressive collapse is a particularly challenging problem within structural mechanics, as it comprises highly non-linear and load-path behavior whose characterization becomes extremely demanding from a numerical viewpoint. On top of that, analysis of progressive collapse is subject to a high degree of uncertainty, as it is highly sensitive to several variables such as loading path, material properties, deterioration processes, etc. The novelty of this proposal arises from the development of framework for designing structures which overlaps between system reliability modelling, objectively considering progressive collapse and related uncertainties, and using modern structural optimization tools.
