Abstract

Temperature affects matter in various ways. Even small changes in temperature impact biological systems. In this sense, devices that can act as probes have been explored to detect variations in temperature. Meanwhile, multimodal devices have attracted attention due to their multifunctionality, which allows them to be applied in the field of nanomedicine for diagnostic, temperature probing, and treatment purposes. To meet these demands, the synthesis methodology and the incorporation of lanthanide ions may produce a compound that displays the properties that are necessary for medical purposes. In this project, we aim to synthesize oxide nanoparticles doped with lanthanide ions by the sol-gel methodology. Lanthanide ions present particular spectroscopic properties stemming from their distinct number of unpaired electrons. These properties allow these ions to be used as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging, to help differentiate between tissues, organs, or pathologies more efficiently. These elements contain thermo-sensitive energy levels that aid identification of cancer and healthy cells. Furthermore, ions like thulium III, erbium III, and holmium III, among others, can be excited by ascending energy conversion, excitation in the infrared region, and emission in the visible region. This advantage is related to excitation in the biological windows at 800 and 1400 nm, which prevents radiation absorption by water molecules in living organisms.
