Music in the city of São Paulo (1827-1853): confronting perspectives of the municipal chamber, provincial legislation and São Paulo periodicals

Abstract

The main objectives of this project are to obtain and to organize information about the musical activity in the city of São Paulo between 1827-1853, and to understand its meanings, through a systematic examination, page by page, of the complete content of four categories of documents issued during this period: a) meeting minutes and general records of the Municipal Chamber of São Paulo, published by the Municipal Archive and the São Paulo Department of Culture; b) laws, decrees and other norms promulgated by the Provincial Assembly of São Paulo between 1835-1853, concerning the musical activity in the capital; c) all numbers of São Paulo periodicals published between 1827-1853, and available at Brazilian Digital Library of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro; d) miscellaneous historical documents from the same period, published in volumes 1 to 160 of Revista do Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo, RAMSP (1934-1957). This research will require the examination of 4,977 pages (physical) of the Registro Geral da Câmara de São Paulo, 4,435 on-line pages of Atas da Câmara de São Paulo, and 9,333 pages (on-line) of periodicals, totaling 18,745 pages (13,768 available on-line), which results in an average of 2,083 pages to be consulted per month, in the 9-month period for processing these documents (within the 12-month project duration), besides the examination of 454 on-line laws and decrees in two months of work, and 160 volumes of RAMSP (70 available online and 90 only on paper) in 4 months of work. In addition to the study of the information obtained and the understanding of the perspectives observed in this documentation, an index of music-related names and subjects will be prepared, with all detected occurrences, but sufficiently detailed to cover all types of localized information about the musical activity in the city of São Paulo between 1827-1853, to be published after the end of this project.
