A look on the habitat heterogeneity: how did the physiology and behavior of tropidurine lizards allow occupation of forests and open environments?

Abstract

The occupation of contrasting environments by organisms occurs along the emergence of phenotypic traits that allow animals to explore local conditions. Thus, observing the patterns of phenotypic variation among populations and at higher hierarchical levels allow us to understand how often phenotypes are repeated in different lineages and how such phenotypic plasticity of a given lineage are modified as consequence of changes in their habitats under the ecological and evolutionary timescale. In this research project we intend to investigate how the phenotypic variation in tropidurine lizard strains related to the occupation of different habitats contrasting in structure and clime (open environments and forests), focusing in behavioral and physiological traits, within two complementary lines of investigation: (1) the thermoregulatory behavior and the physiological responses to temperature; and (2) the social behavior and the hormonal influence on performance. In addition, we will perform ecological niche analysis and make predictions on the effects of climate change on lizard biology, generating elements for discussion of the impacts of environmental changes on biodiversity.
