This proposal covers the thematic topic of "Environment" and sub-topic of "Management of conservation areas". Extreme hydrological events have been recorded in recent years in the western portion of the Amazon basin. The 2014 flood case, for example, produced floods and landslides in several towns and communities in the Madeira River basin, especially those located in the Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS) of the Madeira River, bringing disruption and damage to the population such as: homeless families, isolated communities, damages to the economy, education, agricultural production and health; this latter due to diseases transmitted by water contamination. In view of the negative consequences resulting from droughts and floods on vulnerable communities in the conservation area, this project aims at the Development of a Seasonal Forecast System for Droughts and Floods for the Madeira River Reserve in the State of Amazonas. The seasonal time range allows the planning actions to mitigate the negative effects of extreme hydrological events in the RDS. The physics basedl processes forcing these extreme, meteorological and hydrological, events, will be investigated using observations and numerical experiments. The development of this system will contribute: to support decision makers (public authorities) in planning actions to mitigate the effects of droughts and floods, in planning and reducing losses in agricultural production, in reducing the harmful effects of these events on health and in education and also in reducing the vulnerability of communities in the Madeira River Reserve.
