Abstract

The study aims towards design a series of heat-treatment on a well-defined material class to set a nanostructured bainitic to improvement of classic mechanical properties and wear resistance as a scientific issue. A large amount of research has been conducted on specially designed chemical compositions of steel to set nanostructured carbide-free bainite to maximize their mechanical properties. However, a few researches have been investigated on commercially available steel grades, such as commercially-available spring steel. We believe that the development of nanobainitic steel obtained by low bainitic transformation temperature in medium carbon and silicon steel can provide a high strength and wear resistance with excellent formability. A nanostructured bainitic microstructure comprised of possible fine carbon-enriched film-like retained austenite dispersed in a nanostructured tempered lower bainite during bainitic transformation would be developed during proposed bainitic transformation process. It is expected that the obtained microstructure will be able to improve the ultimate tensile strength up to 1500 MPa with elongation about 15%, without the addition of expensive alloying elements. This is an important scope of suitable replacement of the existing martensitic steel for high hardness used in components subjected for repeated dynamic loads to improve wear resistance and minimize the maintenance cost/time of common railways and general engineering applications. We believe that the proposed heat treatment in the current project can increase about 30% in yield stress and toughness, allows a 30% increase in wear resistance by the Archard equation. Therefore, the proposed heat treatment can increase the heavy-haul component's service life, saving a lot of money due to annual energy savings and maintenance costs. (AU)
