Abstract

Introduction: Although there is evidence about multifactorial interventions in prevention of falls, there is a lack of randomized clinical trials involving case management to decrease potentially modifiable risk factors for falls in older fallers. Objective: To examine the efficacy of a remote intervention based on case management of falls on neuropsychological factors and its adherence and satisfaction in community-dwelling older fallers. Method: A single-blind randomized controlled trial will be conducted with community-dwelling older people who have a history of at least two falls in the past year. The participants will be divided into two Groups (Intervention Group and Control Group) (n=60). The Intervention Group will receive case management performed remotely, which will involve multidimensional assessment, explanation of identified risk factors for falls, an individualized intervention based on the identified risks and monitoring and review of the plan. The Control Group will be accompanied by telephone. All participants will be assessed at baseline, after 16 weeks of intervention and after a further 6 weeks of follow-up. The assessment will consist of clinical and sociodemographic data and neuropsychological measures (cognitive functions, depressive and anxiety symptoms and fear of falling). Also, at 16 weeks, Intervention Group participants will answer two closed questionnaires about adherence and satisfaction with the intervention. The statistical analysis will be conducted by intention to treat, and a significance level of ±=0.05 will be adopted. Expected results: It is expected to identify improvement on neuropsychological risk factors for falls in the Intervention Group and to obtain good adherence and satisfaction with the intervention based on case management.
