Abstract

Brazil is the country with the third-highest number of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the world, and approximately 50% of these are diagnosed before 10 years of age. Children spend a large part of the day in schools, often receiving two large meals at school. National studies have shown an average of 20% of families dissatisfied with the care offered by the school, and more than 70% feel that teachers should be better informed about diabetes and receive training on emergency situations involving diabetes. Objectives: To develop, implement and evaluate a Diabetes Education Program for professionals working in schools. Methods: Prospective study with intervention in the form of educational action and subsequent assessment of the impact of the interventions. The Education Program consists of providing printed educational material, face-to-face training with a diabetes education team, training via a cell phone application or a distance education platform. The study population are patients from the Pediatric Diabetes Outpatient Clinic of Santa Casa de São Paulo and professionals who work in the schools these children and adolescents study. There are, nowadays, approximately 200 patients T1D at school age in our center. Expected results: improvement in the satisfaction of families and school professionals, a greater number of patients who undergo glycemic monitoring and insulin application during the school period, less school absenteeism for reasons related to T1D and improvement in glycated hemoglobin.
