Membrane mimetic models applied in interaction studies, detection, and removal of emerging pollutants

Abstract

This project aims to study and propose solutions to poor water quality, which has increasingly become a public health problem. The focus is given to emerging pollutants (EPs), whose availability in water has increased with the widespread use of chemicals, either by the general population or by industries, contributing to the pollution of water resources. These EPs are defined as synthetic or natural chemicals not commonly monitored in the environment, but with the potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected ecological and/or human health effects. Considering the water crisis and the worldwide concern with EPs, the main contributions intended by this project are: to study interactions and possible effects of EPs in cell membrane models; produce biosensors to monitor the quality of treated water; optimize existing methodologies for the removal of EPs through the development of nanoporous membranes for nanofiltration. All these intended approaches for studies of the interaction of EPs with membrane mimetic models, detection of EPs, and removal of these EPs are based on membrane mimetic models. Thus, the main objective of this project is to benefit from the experience with studies involving mimetic models and their interaction with EPs and apply them to the development of biosensors and nanofiltration membranes. This project has the potential to contribute to the advancement of both scientific knowledge and technology through product development and, consequently, innovation. (AU)
