The M.A.P. Corpus: developing a digital edition system for documents about Women in Portuguese America

The aim of this proposal is to initiate the formation of the M.A.P. Corpus, composed of manuscripts written by women and about women in Portuguese America, philologically edited with the latest digital technologies. The Corpus fonts are part of the M.A.P Catalog, a digital repository created within the scope of the M.A.P (Women in Portuguese America) Project. The project, active since 2017, aims to systematize and make visible for future research a set of documentary sources that are immensely important for philological studies and for studies of the history of language, social history, the history of writing and reading, and the history of women in Brazil, through the construction of an electronic catalog of documents written by women in Portuguese America between 1500 and 1822. The relevance of the Project lies fundamentally in the possibility of organizing this unprecedented documentation at a scarce and essential time for the understanding of the history of formation in Brazil. At present, the Catalog comprises 150 detailed entries and a pilot text with digital philological editing. The integral systematization of this documentation in the form of the Corpus proposed here will allow the expansion of the readership of the texts and the availability of this material for research purposes in the fields of linguistics and computer science. The proposal is part of the work of the Digital Humanities Research Group (formed by MAP researchers) at the Artificial Intelligence Center (C4AI) of the University of São Paulo, currently responsible for the formation of Corpus Carolina (scheduled for launch in March 2022).
