Screening and management of anxiety symptoms and harmful alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemics: evaluation of the feasibility and effectiveness of a protocol of preventive intervention by phone

Abstract

Phase 3 will be characterized by the realization of Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT) that aim to identify the effectiveness of interventions delivered by telephone to reduce symptoms of anxiety and/or harmful alcohol consumption in adults assisted in primary health care services in the city of São Paulo. Participants will be recruited at all stages through the São Paulo City PHC service appointment schedule. Initial screening for alcohol use will be carried out through the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). And to assess the level of anxiety, the State - Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-6) will be used. Individuals who meet the inclusion criteria will receive the Brief Intervention (IB) and the Interpersonal Relationship in Nursing Applied to Anxiety (RIA). Expected contributions: The scientific contributions of this proposal lie in the possibility of identifying limits and possibilities of interventions used in predominantly face-to-face contexts in situations of social distancing, its results can also identify possible gaps for its offering remotely, offering data to its planning and implementation in future situations that require social distance. It is also characterized as a randomized clinical trial on the effectiveness of interventions as proposed. In line with the intervention pyramid for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies, the interventions proposed in this project can be planned and applied on a large scale in the context of the single health system since they can be used by non-specialists to support a large portion of individuals, families and groups that are living or have survived situations related to COVID-19 and other similar calamities that may present themselves in the future.
