Abstract

Prof. Dr. Benoît Gibson is Professor of music analysis and musicology at the Universidade de Évora, Portugal. He is a world renowned specialist of the work of composer, architect and music theorist Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). Prof. Gibson's visit will be the opportunity to discuss ongoing as well as future collaborations between his institution of origin and research units in the State of São Paulo. These collaborations include the edition of the "complete writings of Iannis Xenakis" by an international consortium of musicologist; the edition of a thematic issue of the Brazilian music journal Per Musi in commemoration of the centenary of the composer's birth and research on Xenakis' music to be undergone jointly in the future. These will be discussed during dedicated work sessions at the Núcleo Interdisciplinar de Comunicação Sonora of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (NICS-UNICAMP). The deepening of our understanding of Xenakis' music will also be promoted through a study-day around the analysis and interpretation of his work for piano Herma (1960-61), a particularly important milestone in the composer's trajectory. This study-day, open to a wider public, will take place at the school of music of UNICAMP's Art Institute. It will include three lectures and a round-table and will bring together researchers form the States of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.Since the dates of Prof. Gibson's visit will coincide with concerts planned around Xenakis' music in the states of São Paulo (UNICAMP) and of Minas Gerais (UFMG), lecture-concerts / masterclasses delivered in "direct contact" with the music being performed live will also be organized. These will allow us to extend the impact of Prof. Gibson's visit beyond the circle of music professionals to also benefit students and the general public.Over the course of the 11 days of his visit, Prof. Gibson will visit a total three different campuses (UNICAMP, USP, and UFMG) and his activities, beyond the joint work sessions at NICS, will include five lectures, participation to a round table and meetings with students and faculties.
