Evaluation of the use of waste foundry sand in pavements

Abstract

Due to the word large generation of Discarded Foundry Sand (ADF), estimated at 109 million tons in 2021, several Brazilian and global institutions are developing projects with the aim of increasing the reuse of this material. The objective of this work will be to evaluate the feasibility of using ADF in paving works, both in the construction of base layers and sub-bases of pavements, together with soil, and in the coating layer, incorporating ADF in the asphalt mixture. This evaluation will be preceded by an analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of the ADF and followed by the environmental assessment of the water percolated by the ADF mixtures in soils and in asphalt mixtures, both compacted, aiming at the knowledge of the leaching of contaminants from the ADF to the surrounding soil. and waterways. This is an applied research with quanti-qualitative data to be treated by a multidisciplinary team. Considering the characteristics of the waste and the obstacles experienced by foundry companies in properly handling their waste, as well as industrial landfill agencies in optimizing use of spaces destined for the final destination, the results of this research will have national repercussions and will contribute to the improvement of the environmental quality of the territories.
