Actions to face bullying and discrimination in public schools at Guarulhos

Abstract

Several forms of violence between peers have affected significantly the developing process of students in the country and even around the world. This project aims to understand and combat bullying and discrimination that occur at school, with the hypothesis that the greater the school's adherence to the inclusion proposal as well as the establishment of relationships with the authorities so that they are respected, it is a possibility, among other factors, to reduce those forms of violence. The general objective of this project is to develop school inclusion in two public schools in the municipality of Guarulhos, São Paulo, with the consequent questioning of social hierarchies, in what they contribute to school violence between peers in schools, especially bullying and discrimination. With this improvement in school inclusion it is also proposed directly actions towards the student body, to strengthen their non-authoritarianism, that is, their democratic character and autonomy so that they can develop social coexistence without harming anyone. To fulfill this objective will be proposed activities in schools and the verification of their effects on the reduction or not of bullying and discrimination, as well as on authoritarian and heteronomous tendencies in students. Evaluations will be taken before and after the development of activities, which aim to verify the degree of school inclusion, existing bullying and discrimination, and students' tendencies towards authoritarianism and heteronomy. As the literature indicates, the sixth grade has a high incidence of bullying and as the ninth grade is the end of the student's education in Brazilian elementary school, we propose to analyze the same classroom in each of the schools throughout these years regarding the variables explained and compare them with each other. This project will be developed through the following axes: 1- Inclusive Education; 2-School Hierarchies; 3- Authoritarianism and Autonomy; and 4- Bullying and discrimination. For the development of each one of them, specific texts on each of the themes will be discussed with school educators (managers and teachers); instruments (already developed and tested in previous researches) will be applied to managers, teachers and a class, per school, which will participate from the sixth to the ninth grade, before and after the interventions; discussions will be held with the faculty and the student body about their responses to the instruments applied; it will also be proposed the creation of an Observatory of School Violence. As a result, in addition to the publication in scientific reviews, it is expected to increase the degree of school inclusion of the schools involved and the reduction of bullying and discrimination, aiming to provide subsidies for public policies in São Paulo.
