Development of disposable voltammetric sensors for analysis of cannabinoids in samples of pharmaceutical interest

Abstract

Considering the importance of herbal medicines based on Cannabis Sativa extract, as well as the growing demand for this type of treatment, this project aims at the development of low-cost disposable voltammetric sensor devices (electronic tongues) for the analysis of substances of pharmacological interest. Both samples and standard solutions of the analytes investigated should be diluted directly into support electrolytes, and these solutions should be readily added to the electrode surfaces of printed electrodes, with further investigation of theelectrochemical behavior of these analytes on the electrode surfaces. For the analysis of the electrochemical behavior of the substances, voltammetricmodalities will be employed, such as cyclic, differential pulse, and square wave modalities, andthe amperometric responses of each analyte should be investigated, as well as its oxidation and /or reduction peak potentials. After defining the optimal conditions of electrochemical response,as well as the validation tests of the technique, it is intended to perform the determination of these analytes in samples of pharmacological interest. For each new voltammetric method developed, a comparison study should be providedusing a conventional technique of previously established methodology, such as high performanceliquid chromatography or gas chromatography, aiming at a better basis in the validation steps ofthese new methods.Regarding the disposable printed platforms, it is initially intended to usecommercial disposable electrodes, being later tested electrodes printed on a 3D printer, as well as papertrodes, developed by the research group itself.
