Abstract

Knowing natural capital and the services provided by natural ecosystems is a very useful tool for public policy makers, especially with regard to rural and urban management, spatial planning and management of protected areas. Some ecosystem services are a priority due to the high demand at the local, regional and global scale and the provision of UES at the regional level can improve the resilience of the urban system to long-term disturbances. There is, therefore, the challenge to better understand the dynamics of ecosystems and the services provided by them, as a basis for better planning strategies with sustainability criteria. In this sense, landscape metrics stand out as a potential tool, as they allow analyzing changes in land use and occupation over time, quantifying and also evaluating the effects of human interventions in the environment, in addition to measuring and describing spatial structures and promoting information about the composition and configuration of the landscape, both urban and rural. Thus, this project aims to verify the possibility of evaluating the potential for provision of ecosystem services by forest remnants from the application and interpretation of spatial landscape metrics, measuring the results with a field survey. For that, geoprocessing and spatial analysis tools will be used. Landscape metrics will be calculated using FRAGSTATS, software designed to calculate a wide variety of landscape metrics for categorical map patterns. The field surveys will be carried out analyzing priority forest fragments in each hydrographic basin in the city of Campinas/SP and in a comparative way to the city of Coimbra/Pt. Data will be collected related to the quality of soil, water, air and vegetation in these ecosystems. In general, it is expected to present parameters for evaluating the ecosystem services provided by forest remnants within the municipalities; obtain technical subsidies to establish a proposal for the evaluation of ecosystem services in forest remnants as well as promote technical subsidies for the establishment of a proposal for Payments for Environmental Services (PES) in forest remnants, both in rural and peri-urban and urban environments, through the use of intelligent systems for environmental management (Learning machine) in the municipality of Campinas/SP.
