Development of GPU-SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2 sustainable multifunctional hybrid coatings for corrosion protection of metallic structures

Abstract

Due to the ease modify of chemical structure of polyurethanes (PU), and consequently their properties, this family of polymers is applied in several commercial areas, from foams to coatings. When applying PU as coatings to metallic surfaces, good adhesion is important and can be obtained through hybridization with ceramic materials formed by SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2. This research project proposes the development of new organic-inorganic hybrid materials (OIH) GPU-SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2, from polyols that can be obtained from renewable sources, by the sol-gel methodology. Polyols must promote the formation of cross-linked chains and give the GPU greater molar mass, affecting its resistance to abrasion, flexibility and thermal stability. The sol-gel route will be used in the conjugation of the GPU chains with the SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2 inorganic part. The formation of class II hybrid will be done with the aid of (3-aminoproyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), an organosilane with an amine termination, which reacts with the isocyanate terminations of the GPU, forming urea groups. One of the challenges of this project is to determine the best formulation for applying these new OIH in coatings that are thin with good thermal stability, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, adhesion, hydrophobicity, and good performance as a barrier against corrosion of metallic substrates and do not show defects, such as cracks, fissures and/or cracks. In this line, the choice of renewable polyols (lignin, castor oil, sorbitol...) and SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2 as the inorganic part, is intended to include the research group, GFQM (Group of Physical-Chemistry of Materials from IQ-UNESP/Araraquara), at the forefront of the production of multifunctional OIH materials using renewable resources, adding value both to the final material itself and to its feedstock. At the end o, it is expected to obtain GPU- SiO2/TiO2/ZrO2 coatings from renewable sources that present multifunctionality in addition to protective capacity against corrosion of metallic surfaces, thermal stability and abrasion resistance comparable to the best coatings, based on derivatives of petroleum, found in the literature.
