Fostering the planning of scientific activities in the FACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment) experiment in the Amazon forest

Abstract

This proposal gathers two groups of scientists - one based at Unicamp, Brazil and another based at TUM, Germany, which have a long-standing collaboration (see FAPESP Proc. #2015/02537-7) in the area of ecosystem modeling of the Amazon forest, with especial dedication to the AmazonFACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment) experiment (https://amazonface.inpa.gov.br/). The AmazonFACE project is a large-scale ecosystem experiment aiming to investigate the effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. Since this is the first time that a FACE experiment is installed in tropical forests, the project will shed light in the potential stability of the Amazon rainforest with climate change and its capacity to take up CO2 from the atmosphere, thereby mitigating climate change. Such a collaboration between groups dates back from the time of the first exploratory workshop on the feasibility of making a FACE experiment in the tropics, that took place in 2013 in Washington, DC. This research partnership has resulted in the exchange of students from Brazil who made scientific exchange in Prof. Rammig's lab (see for example FAPESP Proc. # 2019/08194-5), and also in several high-impacts articles (e.g. Fleischer et al. 2019 Nat. Geosci.). The current proposal is very timely because Prof. Rammig and Prof. Lapola are both leading the elaboration of a bilateral research proposal, the elaboration of which we believe will be facilitated with the mobility funds requested in this proposal. Due to the global relevance of the AmazonFACE, we propose two missions to bring together researchers from TUM and Sao Paulo aiming to 1) promote the ellaboration and submission of such joint proposal, 2) offer short courses and talks given by both delegations during the visit and 3) produce new press material for the project, such as pictures and videos for scientific outreach.
