Abstract
The aim of this project is to bring together groups of geometers working at the University of Münster (the strongest in Germany, if not in Europe) and the Universidade de São Paulo (one of the strongest in Brazil) to explain their methods and techniques, survey recent developments and disseminate their own research findings relating broadly to the area of differential geometry, chart new directions of research, and explore possible collaborations, especially among the different groups. We propose to initiate this exchange program with a series of lectures given by researchers of both universities during their visits at the host institution. The research areas of both groups have affinities and common interests, especially in the areas of isometric group actions, Riemannian foliations and geometric variational problems, with some previous contact. The project will be considered successful if it leads to new collaborative projects between researchers from WWU and USP, eventually including PhD dissertations in geometry co-mentored by faculty from these two institutions. It is expected that this 12-month project will lead to additional exchanges of faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students and joint conferences which will strengthen the geometry research groups at WWU and USP.
