Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflammatory, non-communicable disease that affects the protective and supporting tissue, and presents scaling and root planing as standard treatment. In recent years, different therapeutic strategies have been proposed for the adjuvant treatment of periodontal diseases, but little is known about how natural substances can interact with the progression of periodontal disease and the host's immune response. The present project aims to expand the knowledge about the action of new substances on inflammatory mechanisms involved in periodontal disease, particularly in the face of periodontitis induction in rats. Studies show the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action of Citral, which is a mixture of essential oil present in plants such as lemongrass and ginger, but there are no reports on the possible effect of Citral on periodontitis. Therefore, this study intends to evaluate the action of Citral in periodontitis, using the periodontitis model accepted by the scientific community for the study of periodontal inflammation, that is, ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. 108 Wistar Hannover rats will be selected, divided into 6 groups (n=9). After 3 and 15 days of ligation, the concentration of plasma and gingiva cytokines, bone support and metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) will be evaluated. The results of this project will be important in the field of dentistry, bringing new substances to the treatment of periodontitis. (AU)
