Abstract

The objective of this project is to study both empirically and theoretically the effect of managers' human capital on the firm's TFP and how this relationship interacts with the economy's production structure in order to determine the aggregate PFT. Empirically, the objective is to merge the RAIS and PIA databases to produce estimates of total factor productivity at the firm level. Then, the effect of the managers' human capital on the firm's TFP is estimated. Several specifications will be considered in order to control for different characteristics of managers. Theoretically, the aim is to develop a multisectoral general equilibrium model with endogenous occupational choice to quantify the importance of the channel proposed above and to study how much of the differences in per capita income between Brazil and the United States can be explained by differences in the level and distribution of the human capital of entrepreneurs.
