History of Science Education in Brazil: the organization of research sources from the creation of an open institutional repository

Abstract

The school subjects in the field of natural sciences have been suffering the influences of several educational proposals since their insertion in the teaching programs in the nineteenth century. Among these more recent proposals are, for example, the cognitivist-inspired methodology of rediscovery, the ideas linked to technicist education, and the proposals for citizenship education. However, the history of education in Brazil still lacks investigations that interpret the relationship between these proposals and science teaching and help in the understanding of the changes and permanences that have shaped this educational field. Thus, this project has two objectives: the first is to preserve the memory of science teaching through the organization of an open institutional digital collection in which the documents from the process of constitution of the area of Chemistry teaching between the 1960s and 1990s will be prioritized; the second is to analyze the process of elaboration of teaching proposals and the constitution of the community of Chemistry teaching. The construction of the repository will consist of selecting, scanning and cataloging documents produced by teachers who worked in Chemistry teaching during this period, and the analysis will make use of the theoretical contributions of cultural history. It is expected that the results will contribute to the understanding of the formation of the area of Chemistry education and, consequently, to the formation of science teachers in undergraduate and graduate programs. Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute to the process of internationalization of research in the history of education by seeking an interlocution with Argentinean researchers in order to identify possible links between the two Latin American countries in educational processes for the teaching of sciences.
