Abstract

Small geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs) are topographic depressions surrounded by highlands with no visible surface connection between others water bodies (river, wetland and lake). Even with the small size and isolation, this type of wetland provide important ecosystem services, i.e. storage of SOM, biogeochemical cycling of CH4, CO2 e N2O, river flow regulation and aquifer recharge and occurrence of endemic and rich biodiversity. Despite the importance, the GIWs have been destroyed by the conversion and intensification of land use. In the countryside of São Paulo state, in the sectors of Peripheral Paulista Depression and Cuesta, the rate of loss and degradation are clear although the total loss was not quantified due to the lack of inventory and the qualitative and quantitative assessment of soil components. In the region, the GIWs have distinct hydrological regimes which can determine differences on the emissions of GHG emissions until now unknow. The objective of this project is to make a refined inventory of the small GIWs aiming to understand their formation, biogeochemical dynamics and evaluate the anthropogenic pressure that impact the current state. The combined approach provides fundamental information of GIWs necessary to the conservation as well show the potential of these areas to provide ecosystem services for environmental sustainability.
