Scientific EMU: acquisition of equipment for innovation in techniques of imaging and microscopy for research

Abstract

Imaging technologies allow researchers to study from cell and molecular biology to complex biological and pathophysiological systems, contributing significantly to the state of the art in research and to obtaining new insights into scientific and medical problems and challenges not accessible in other ways. In this sense, there is an immense demand for innovation in super-resolution microscopy and in vivo imaging equipment for the scientific community of the USP Campus at Ribeirão Preto and for the State of São Paulo, which will help researchers to face questions at the frontier of research knowledge in biomedical and health. For this, we joined efforts from the academic community of FMRP, as well as from outside USP, to apply a proposal that aims to acquire three imaging equipment with the latest technology available on the market. Thus, the proposal aims to acquire: 1) a super-resolution confocal microscope; 2) a transmission electron microscope with a tomography system for obtaining 3D images at the ultrastructure level; and 3) a single-photon emission computed tomography (microCT/SPECT) equipment for pre-clinical use in rodents. These new equipment will be housed in existing image facilities of the Core Facility of FMRP, which have been structured since 2010 and manned by specialized technicians body dedicated to providing advice and training to researchers who use its infrastructure.
