Abstract

According to IHRSA data from 2020, 184 million people in the world exercise in gyms, being a market with more than 210 thousand gyms that move approximately U$\$97 billion annually. In Brazil, 10 million people practice exercises in gyms.Currently, most gyms and physical exercise equipment only provide users with resistive effort and, in some cases, a cycle counter for the exercise being performed. One of the biggest reasons for dropout in gyms is the lack of motivation and lack of knowledge about the real effects of the practice of physical exercises associated with the lack of perception of improvement in short training periods. To remedy the main causes of evasion, this company proposes to implement several sensors in commercial machines to, in sequence, process all the data collected and provide complete feedback on the evolution of the users. Sensors must support the three main device types: aerobic, free weight, and pulley weights. In addition, it is proposed the implementation of game-based software that, in addition to providing feedback in a simple and intuitive way, should motivate users to keep performing exercises, whether in the gym or outside. In this PIPE1 project, only free weight devices will be addressed since the others are in more advanced stages of the project. The data must be processed in order to compare amplitudes, positions and number of cycles of each exercise in an adapted way for each user, taking into account their body measurements and a first training that serves as calibration of the machines. From these data, it should be possible to estimate caloric expenditure, muscle mass gain, propose new exercises depending on the user's intention and assist in the correct execution of the exercise. With this, it is expected to see a reduction in the evasion of gym users and/or home training, providing a better quality of life and, consequently, a reduction in comorbidities. In addition, it is expected to make scientific contributions with the development of innovative devices for gyms and using data collected in order to improve caloric calculations and obtain more data on the reduction of diseases due to the practice of exercises.
