Abstract

The research project seeks to produce and systematize knowledge to improve the implementation of biodiverse Agroforestry Systems (AFS) public policy, especially in federal agrarian reform settlements, under the responsibility of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In addition, it intends to foster associated public policies and management processes, focusing on the environmental subprojects of the Sustainable Rural Development Program, as a device of public policy to strengthen family farming and the sustainability of agrarian reform territories. Qualitative and quantitative approaches will be used to perform the analysis, such as, participatory diagnoses, socioeconomic assessment and territorial modeling. The expected results seek to provide subsidies for public policy planning and for related public management processes in agrarian reform settlements, considering the AFS effectiveness and continuity, in addition to strengthening positive social, economic and environmental impacts. The research will examine the production, processing, and marketing of the products generated in the AFS and the support public policies. In parallel, a socioeconomic impact analysis and potential expansion scenarios of the AFS in rural settlements of São Palo state will be constructed based on statistical modeling, which will consider the biophysical and agroecological features of the settlements, as well as sociocultural and potential consumer markets issues. The research structure is conceived with the support of theoretical concepts of agriculture multifunctionality, agroecology, food sovereignty and short marketing circuits, offering reflection elements to promote and improve relevant public policies for sustainable development of the agrarian reform settlements.
