Abstract

Water availability plays critical role in sweet potato yield and quality, especially during the early stages of the development. Water shortage is frequent in places where sweet potato is grown, as the soils are commonly sandy and the temperature high. Amongst the possible solutions, developing a drought-tolerant cultivar is the most suitable and cost-effective economical approach. Identifying drought-tolerant genotypes is key for the selection process. However, the screening is laborious and hinders the ability to evaluate large number of genotypes. We hypothesize that the high-resolution RGB (Red-Green-Blue) images can be used to assess drought tolerance in sweet potato, along with crop growth reduction and physiological responses. Once established, the high-throughput phenotyping algorithms will provide a timely and accurate information that will be helpful in the breeding program for drought tolerance. (AU)
