Abstract

Brazil stands out as the world's higest producer and consumer of common beans. However, the medium productivity is considered low due to biotic and abiotic factors, being drought conditions one of the main limiting factors. Therefore, in the development process of new varieties to the common bean agribusiness market, breeding programs looks for varieties with desired characteristics of the market and with drought tolerance in the news cultivars. Thus, the objective of the study comprises in the selection drought tolerant lines as well as to subsidize the Improvement Program of the IAC on the direction of crosses with drought tolerant genotypes for future recommendations. Therefore, will be evaluated on the characteristics related to drought tolerance of eight cultivars (BAT 477, SEA-5, IAPAR-81, Carioca Comum, IAC-Alvorada, IAC-Carioca Tybatã, IPR-Uirapuru, IAC-Diplomata) and the F3 progenies derived from crosses among the respective cultivars. The assessments in relation to drought tolerance will be achieved in the shoots and in roots (rizotron), where they will be preserved in no-irrigated and irrigated conditions. In the greenhouse experiments will be installed in a randomized block design, split plot with two replications with water stress imposed at various stages of plant development (vegetative, pre-flowering and post flowering), where they will be evaluated as to the water relations, leaf area, dry matter and grain yield by selecting F3 drought tolerant progenies. With these assessments, search will be developed on superior genotypes for the traits related to drought tolerance and better use of the water component for a future recommendation of new cultivars.
