Archaeometry tools applied to architectural archaeology research: studies of manufactured materials in 19th century railway infrastructures

Abstract

The research project presented here aims to develop an archaeometric analysis of manufactured materials within the framework of architectural archaeology, with its investigation applied to the constructive material remains of 19th century railway infrastructures. Among them, for the collection and analysis of materials, we chose railway sites built between 1867 and 1882, located in Paranapiacaba, Jundiaí, Campinas and Rio Claro. The aim is to resolve a set of theoretical-methodological issues, sampling parameters and the selection of instruments that will provide a better understanding of the traces of industrialisation in the South American context. From this point of view, archaeometric examination, applied to contemporary industrial structures, aims to promote a line of archaeological research that has been little explored in the country, making it possible to study the most efficient methods for documenting the physical-chemical properties of manufactured materials and their historical context.
