Abstract

This project takes railroad stretches of former railway operation in the state of São Paulo, where some of the territorial structures implemented to carry out the industrial production of transport (railway yards and/or workshops, railways or infrastructure works) of four companies that operated in the interior of the state of São Paulo between 1867 and 1971 existed: in Campinas, Jundiaí, Rio Claro, Araraquara, Bauru, of the Paulista Company; in Campinas and Ribeirão Preto, of the Mogiana Company; and also, in Sorocaba, Mairinque, Botucatu, Bauru and Ourinhos of the E. F. Sorocabana. The project aims to characterize territorial systems of industrial production of transport and the current public management of its vestiges from approaches based on human rights and digital humanities. This proposal elects the historical territory of the railway operation and the urban context in which the protected railway assets are inserted to test cross-cutting methodologies of historical-spatial register, to test digital humanities tools applied to historical and heritage studies, to apprehend social interactions (values, perceptions and memories) with protected material assets and to identify public policies incident on the protected assets. We consider various disciplinary understandings (history, archaeological, urbanistic, architectural, anthropological, touristic), from different perspectives, to address various issues linked to the historical territory of transport production, which address both the material industrial remains along the lines and the historical stratification of values (memorial or current) in the areas of their occurrence (urban, rural and peri-urban). Our challenge is to perform a systemic analysis of railway assets in relation to the problems of spatio-temporal recording of transport operations and holistic management of railway industrial heritage. In general, the expected activities and products are: publication of books and articles, realization of research seminars, study missions, field research and institutional scientific exchanges. The proposal also has potential to train human resources and to support public policies (preservation, urban planning, cultural or educational) - of growing interest in Brazil and internationally, as demonstrated by the international partnerships associated with the project. This project is part of the research and training actions promoted by the Red Iberoamericana de Investigación Laboratorio Americana de los Paisajes Históricos de la Producción (REDAPPLAB), coordinated by Enrique Larive López (Universidad de Sevilla, Spain) - accredited since 2019 as a research network and supported by the Asociación Universitaria Iberoamericana de Postgrado (AUIP).
