Abstract
The present proposal deals with experimental evaluation and modeling of transport phenomena typical of emerging technologies in the area of energy conversion and storage involving phase change and/or supercritical flows. These emerging technologies are related to thermohydraulic analysis of heat transfer processes including flows under supercritical thermodynamic conditions in nuclear reactors and Brayton cycle heat exchangers of concentrated solar power systems, quasi-critical two-phase flows in heat exchangers employed in organic Rankine cycles (ORC), and melting/solidification processes in thermo-accumulators. These processes involve transport phenomena under atypical operational conditions concerning the current employed technologies and for this reason the project is focused on providing fundamental insights into the physical mechanisms occurring in the related transport phenomena through experimental tests and numerical simulations employing up to date techniques. Therefore, it is expected that the execution of the present proposal has great potential of expanding the frontier of knowledge by proposing semi-empirical prediction methods and numerical models that can be incorporated into design projects, and collaborate to the development of the mentioned emerging technologies. Moreover, the results obtained from the proposed study are significantly promising due to the possibility of being used as benchmarking to validate and develop current software employed in the design of such devices.
