Abstract

The advance of the expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Northern Arc region implies negative externalities related to environmental and socioeconomic issues, mainly under the influence of climate change. The strategic location, due to the proximity of the ports to international consumer markets and the wide availability of more sustainable intermodal transport routes, makes this region play a central role in this process. Despite the natural logistic aptitude, the region aggregates different biomes, ample biodiversity and great susceptibility to the impacts of climate change, accentuating the debates as to the dichotomy of agricultural expansion versus environmental preservation. As for soybean production, different factors contribute to its spatial distribution, with the concentration of investments in technology and infrastructure being one of the main ones. The present research project aims to assess whether the expansion of soybeans in agricultural frontier regions under climate change scenarios affects logistical efficiency. This research will contribute directly to the understanding of the components of the expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Northern Arc, as well as assist in strategic planning and execution of infrastructure works, in terms of subsidizing sustainable public policies for the promotion of the development of Brazilian agribusiness.
