Abstract

This research project aims to develop a whitening mouthrinse with bioactive glass in different concentrations and to evaluate its efficacy and safety. This project comprises three phases. The first one will characterize the bioactive glass particle and will develop the experimental hydrogen peroxide-based whitening mouthrinse containing different bioactive glass concentrations. The formulations will be submitted to different stability tests (viscosity, pH, and density), as well as free fluoride concentration and hydrogen peroxide concentration. The second phase is the evaluation of the formulations regarding their whitening efficacy (tooth color alteration by spectrophotometry and shade guides), considering the color stability and susceptibility to staining. The potential hydrogen peroxide release on bovine enamel specimens will be measured (titrimetry). The safety of mouthrinses on mineral content and superficial alteration of enamel and dentin will be also assessed (microhardness, roughness, scanning electron microscopy). The effect of mouthrinse treatment on dentin permeability will be evaluated. The results will contribute to deepening the knowledge on the bioactivity of glass particles, how they protect dental substrates, and their mechanism of action during the whitening process. Renowned researchers are taking part in a collaboration network for this present study, which presents innovation potential with the development of new products, as well as the incorporation of methodology to enhance the research lines of the Department of Restorative Dentistry of ICT-Unesp laboratory.
