Abstract

It is a study of the circuits, agencies, and processes that, throughout the 1990s and 2000s, involved researchers from Brazil and France in spreading and appropriating the "new cultural history" as the dominant paradigm in the subfield of history of education. It is based on the exchange experiences of four professors from the Faculty of Education of the University of São Paulo between 1989 and 1991, mainly at the Institut National de Recherche Pédagogique and the Service de Histoire de l'Éducation, to investigate the developments in teaching, research, researcher training, and in the editorial, scientific, and institutional fields. As travel experiences are occasions for cultural exchange, I explore the hypothesis that the exchanges activated circulation between these national communities, producing connections with varied effects on the production of knowledge and structure of specialized fields. Theoretical and practical repertoires of French historiography were appropriated and reinterpreted in the Brazilian context, representing a "paradigmatic shift" that challenged the then-predominant academic writing model.
